The initiative to hold the China International Import Expo exhibition was expressed by President Xi Jinping in May 2017 at the One Belt, One Road International Cooperation Forum in Beijing. The exhibition is organized by the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China and the People's Government of Shanghai.
Heads of states and members of governments of dozens of countries traditionally take part in the opening ceremony of the exhibition.
